Arnel Agravante is a team lead of one of the biggest BPO companies in the Philippines.

During our interview, he shares how he manages not just to survive but to thrive in the call center industry.

He also shares his story, how he ended up working in the call center and characteristics one should possess to be able to be successful in their chosen career path.

According to Arnel, practice makes permanent and not perfection.

He overcame his challenges in speaking English fluently by practicing how to speak in English and listening to movies or video clips on proper pronunciation everyday.

Perseverance is the key in BPO, he advised.

What’s the story on you got started working at a call center?

I started on Nov 19, 2007, after being referred.

Our family business defunct.

I was praying for a job to sustain my family needs.

This time I am not good with the language.

What did you study in college and why did you shift to call center work?

I took up AB Political Science AT UE-Manila.

My decision to switch to BPO is due to family necessity.

What’s your favorite part about working in a call center?

The moment when I am handling difficult callers.

Because I can help them out to their concerns.

They were very thankful after that.

It gives me satisfaction.

Second, every payouts.

What is a typical workday like?

Usually, I come to work prepared to face challenges brought by customers.

There are instances I am getting stressful callers, those who wont listen.

I still focus on the issue and resolution.

Can you share a story of a challenge that you had to overcome while working in a call center?

The greatest challenge I had was when I don’t really know how to speak proper English.

I had hard time in responding to concerns and inquiries due to this limitation.

Every day practice by speaking and listening to movies and video clips of proper pronunciation are the keys to overcome this challenges.

What’s your favorite accomplishment?

When I became a TL.

I motivated and guided my team to sell.

Also, when I was a QA, I love to teach people how to move towards excellence.

What is a popular call center advice or call center saying that you hear a lot but is actually wrong?

“Practice makes perfect” - is wrong.


What is your advice to someone looking for a job?

Know first what they really like to do. Yes, big money is here but you need to work hard first.

BPO is not an option because tasks in BPO are mostly stressful.

Do not settle for less, after all you will work 9 hours 5 times a week.

Perseverance is the key in BPO.

What is your advice to someone who wants to do better at their call center job?

Do something to possess these characteristics: makapal ang mukha.

Tibay ng sikmura and use the language at all times… pera pera na ang labanan.

Do you have a referral program in your company?

Yes, we have. They may apply at any Concentrix site Mon to Fri from 10 am to 5 pm, just mention my name Arnel Agravante.

What’s a recent upgrade that you bought with your call center money that changed your life?

Incentives from upselling and other matrices.

What do you do to overcome a stressful day?

I switch my attention to other things like planning the weekend bicycle ride.

What’s the biggest misconception about people working for a BPO company?

We are super rich, drug addicts, HIV haven.

Do you have any food hacks? It can be advice for tipid days, it can be a favorite place to eat near your current/old call center.

What’s your dream job or career after call center work?

Just to have an animal farm.
