I noticed a few techniques that people I look up to have in their conversations. I also noticed that whenever I used these techniques I sound smarter and give better answers. These techniques are useful in interview situations, everyday questions and call center work. Here are some of the things I learned and apply so far.

Verify and rephrase the question before you begin to answer questions.

It’s easy to misinterpret, mishear or misunderstand questions.

A common mistake job hunters have is that they have interview answers ready for most interview questions. As a result, without listening to the question properly we sometimes give a full (but wrong answer) by mistake. This had happened to me a few times.

My interviewer was totally talking about a different situation than what I understood about the question and as a result my interviewer pointed out that I didn’t understand the question.

What will happen if I verify and rephrase?

You demonstrate professionalism and listening skills.

The question becomes clear and understood.

Better answers are thought of because you have more time to think.

You can also use it to avoid looking stupid (or lying) when you use uhmms and uhhhh’s.

How do I verify and rephrase?

Before I answer a question I ask them if I got the question correctly and to make sure I got it correctly I rephrase the question.

So you’re asking me about myself. Would you want me to start with something random about myself (If random I give a bit about my background then focus on work) or with my work experience?

I don’t use the same technique on all the questions but I do end up using it a few times especially when I’m answering a question I’m not prepared to answer. Sometimes I end up brainstorming the answer by asking the interviewer clarifying questions.

Well the advertisement says the salary is around (amount). Can you tell me more about the packages offered?

Acknowledge the question by telling them how you feel about the question to avoid sounding like a robot.

That’s an interesting/difficult question. Wow it’s the first time I’ve had to think about that.

Stall when you need to but don’t do this often.

Let me think about that for a moment/minute.

Let me organize my thoughts/words for a bit.

Buy yourself more time by giving an introduction to your answer.

The answer at the top of my head is…

Let me start by…

In my opinion…

(Rephrased question) is…

Correct yourself when you notice an error or think of a better answer.

What I meant to say is…

Let me try to explain that more clearly…

When answering interview questions, it’s hard to know where to start. Random answers are unreliable because they are random and it’s not wise to put your answers and job to fate.

I hope these techniques will help you with your interviews. Do you have an effective interview technique that you use? Do you have questions? Start a conversation in the comments bellow.

I’m going to teach you how to answer the dreaded question “Tell me something about yourself.” I found out today that a lot of people when asked about themselves give bullshit corporate answers like. “I’m a patient, hardworking person that is looking for ways to contribute my skills and talents to your company.” or something like this:

1) I am a person with strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to get along well with people. I enjoy challenges and looking for creative solutions to problems.

2) Besides the details given in my resume, I believe in character values, vision and action. I am quick in learning from mistakes. I am confident that the various tests that you have conducted will corroborate my competencies aptitude and right attitude for the job.

If you were applying in my company and give me those answers it will give me the following impressions:
One: You are bullshitting me.
Two: You are lazy. I am asking about you and you are giving me a copy pasted answer from the internet.

To solve this problem I’m going to teach you how I answer. I deconstructed my answer into a series of questions about myself and it includes a bunch of follow up questions I answer after the interviewer becomes interested in hearing what I tell them. It’s not a complete list but its an awesome way to start.

On the other end…

I’d like to know more about you. Seriously. There are 7,000 of you who read my lessons this month. I’ve only met around a hundred. This is both a training and bonding activity. I’d like to really connect with you by reading your answers.

Copy paste the questions and email me your answers or paste them in the comments bellow.
What is your name?
Where are you from?
What was your past work?
What did you do in that job?
What kind of traits can you take from that job and apply it in a call center job?
Why did you pick that job?
Why did you pick this job?
Where did you study?
How do you spend your free time?
What do you enjoy doing?
What kind of people do you enjoy being with?
What’s your favorite quote?

How many times should you apply before getting hired in a call center?

Here are my answers.

What is your name?

My name is James Kevin Lopez Olega.

Where are you from?

I live in Sucat in Paranaque. I also lived in Alabang, QC, Mandaluyong and Makati.

What was your past work?

I used to work in sales and business development (a fancy way of saying, sales, marketing, training and whatever else the hell the boss or the client wants me to do).

What did you do in that job?

I offered products and services to clients (mostly companies) and took care of requests.

What kind of traits can you take from that job and apply it in a call center job?

Well since I was doing sales, I learned that how you say things is a big factor in convincing people to listen and act on the solution I’m presenting. I’m also dealing with difficult people whether they are prospects or clients.

Why did you pick that job?

I used to be a really shy person. A close friend of mine advised that I overcome this by getting a job in sales. After a few months I was able to get over my fear of talking to people and now I’m used to it.

Why did you pick this job?

I want to work in a call center because the pay is decent (I say decent because I’ve made bigger amounts of money in sales) and stable. Big companies pay on time all the time. I’ve worked with start ups and local businesses and I’ve experienced pays being delayed a lot. I also like the fact that work ends after work. If my shift is until 9:30am then I’m expected to leave at 9:30am. No homework. I can have a life after work.

Where did you study?

I studied in iAcademy in Makati.

How do you spend your free time?

I like writing, meeting new people, exploring the net and recently I am learning how to cook.

What do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy travelling, writing, reading things, watching (feel good and inspiring) movies and collecting skills.

What kind of people do you enjoy being with?

I enjoy hanging out with people who are positive and fun to talk to. I like people who read books and blogs. I like people who like food and travel. I love meeting people who inspire me to be better.

What’s your favorite quote?

Today’s Tragedies are Tomorrow’s Comedies – Colin Wright.

How many times should you apply before getting hired in a call center?

As many times as needed to get hired. Look do not mindlessly do things like you did in school. Treat your job application as you would when, you are playing DOTA, trying to pursue that hot partner of yours, or learning cooking or martial arts or something you are interested in. Be interested and learn what you need to learn. Apply that and get better until you get hired.

I’d love to hear your answers. Email away.

I wrote this essay a while back about leveling up your game in real life. If you play games on the computer, I figure you could relate to the lessons I will be sharing. Here goes.

High level play is exciting because there are better opportunities. I’m not much of a musician, dancer or a sports guy. I’m more of a gamer though. I’ve been playing games since I was a kid.

I played a lot of strategy games, role playing games and first person shooters. You know, Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, Doom, Myth, Halo and so on. I played and mastered them to a certain level.

I also download and play a lot of iOS games.

I also realized something recently. Most of the games I played had characters that level up and a lot of things I learned in these games are transferable in real life. Take Diablo for example.

You start with a character (I use the Necromancer) and your goal is to grow stronger and beat Diablo and whatever monster in the way.
You start at level one and you have to manage your character well to win.

You have to add stats to your strength, dexterity, vitality and energy. You’ll also have a list of skills to master and some items to buy, pickup and maintain.

I’ve worked in sales and I realized that most strategies and techniques are transferable to a different sales job. It’s all just a matter of knowing the rules (and language) in that job.

Interestingly, the same thing applies to these games. I’ve been applying a beginner’s mind in everything I do and approach things by emptying my cup bringing in my past strategies once they’re applicable (in games and in real life).

Take care of your character

Killing Diablo and his legion of monsters is no easy task. When playing the game you need to continually ask yourself what stat or skill you need to boost to complete your strength. Is it your damage, attack speed, accuracy, life or energy.

1. To complete the quests you need to keep your character alive. You need to move forward without taking unnecessary hits. Do you have enough life to move forward? Do you have enough potions to continue fighting?

2, You need to enough energy to use your skills. Otherwise I risk getting myself killed in the middle of a clash with the forces of darkness.

3. You need to manage your manage your strengths. Are you strong enough? Do you hit fast enough? Do your attacks hit? Do you have enough life and energy to complete the quest?

Manage your items and money

The good items in these games are expensive. I mean really expensive.

1. I realized that to buy awesome items, I need to hold off from buying the good items so I have enough gold to buy the great items.

2. If I don’t buy an item, chances are I’ll pick up something (for free) as I continue playing. Its not always about gold. A lot of times what I need shows up as I continue playing.

3. I also need to keep my inventory small so I can pick up more items in the battlefield.

Manage your tactics

I can’t always overwhelm and overpower the forces of evil. That’s their job. My job is to win despite the odds in strength and numbers.

1. If there’s a lot of monsters, I kill them one at a time. I use hit and run tactics and take them out one by one.

2. I try to batch my attacks. I use area effect attacks and take out as many monsters as I can with a fewer strikes whenever I can.

3. Each monster has a weakness. Some demons are fire proof. Some are resistant to cold and lighning. Some are immune to physical attacks. Despite that each of them has a weakness.

4. Each character (I can use) is different. They have different strengths, weakness, skills and tactics.

How is this similar to real life

I’ll leave you with some thoughts. Answer for yourself how the tactic applies in real life.

1. I’m me and you are you. We may be similar or different. We can use each other’s tactics or use different ones. There’s also a level difference. You can’t beat Diablo at level one. You need to be at a higher level to complete that quest.

2. How do you level up? Complete your quests and kill monsters. How do you kill monsters? Hit them until they’re dead. How do you hit them? Just attack. How do you attack? Keep playing until you are able to do so.

3. If you can’t beat a legion hit them one by one.

4. Get stronger (items, lessons, skills, weapons, etc.)

5. Take care of your character. Do you have full health? Do you have full energy? If not, recharge. If yes, attack.

6. Don’t always buy. You can pick up awesome items for free. Keep just a few items so you have more opportunities to pick up awesome items.

7. Awesome items are expensive and not always available. That’s why its always good practice to have enough gold so you can buy it when it’s available.

8. Don’t worry about dying, it’s just a game. You can always try again and play more intelligently. In real life, challenges sometimes feel like you’re facing giant demons but the reality is it’s not life threatening (as much as it looks like it). Just keep playing. After enough attempts you can slap any monster around. Go forth and make Diablo your bitch.

I totally suck. I used to think I’m below average but now I realized I suck. When someone tells you that you suck the person cares for you right? He or she is on the lookout for your welfare and doesn’t want you to be hurt or urging you to improve or do things their way.

I suck. I know. Nobody’s paying attention. As I work on what I’m working on, my job, my blog, my business, somehow I notice it gets better. Possibly the benefit of keeping things secret is that when fruit comes out it’ll be a surprise for everyone.

I sucked at writing and building websites. Now I reach thousands of readers with my message.

I suck at a lot of other things. I know I’ll be better. I suck means I’m doing something. It’ll work or not work. It’s my art.

To learn martial arts I got beat up. To learn grammar I got laughed at. To learn to write I got corrected. To learn business I lost money. To learn who to trust at work I got backstabbed. To learn the value of love, I lost…

To succeed I’ll probably fail a lot. What else is new?

I suck means I started. I suck means I’m still here. I suck because I’ll learn. It’s part of life.

The alternative is to do nothing or to settle with what you don’t want. I’d rather suck now than to suck it up like you’re doing.

Sucking is a better alternative.

You won’t suck forever.

What do you suck at?

Dear Kevin,

What call center can I apply in? I’m new in Manila and I want to work as a call center agent. I hope you can help me. I don’t know where to start. What Call Center companies are hiring in Metro Manila? I hope to get your answer soon.

Sincerely,

New In Manila

Dear New in Manila,

I get the question “where do I apply” a lot. Not just from people who are new in Manila but for people who are about to start to apply.

Call center companies are expanding and have moved to bigger locations so when it comes to the address, Google is your friend.

I always recommend starting with the popular big BPO and Call Center Companies since you can learn a lot in the process whether you pass or fail.

You have better opportunities because they are stable companies. If you manage to get hired the offer will be better.

Some of you may say, if I fail, I will lose the opportunity. To which, I answer, if you fail, you may reapply after six months which has rarely happened to me because after visiting 16-30 companies I end up settling for an offer that I like and I’m sure you will too.

In no particular order here are some call center companies that are hiring in Metro Manila.

Convergys

Aegis – (formerly People Support)

Teletech

Teleperformance

Stream -(formerly eTelecare)

West contact services (email me and I’ll refer you)

Sutherland Global Services.

Sitel

Sykes

NCO

Genpact (alabang)

KGB (formerly Infonxx)

IBM

HSBC

Telus (formerly Ambergris)

24/7

Accenture

If you’d like to work for smaller call center companies, I have some friends who have openings. Please visit the job openings section of this site.

(If you’re a call center recruiter and you would like to be added to this list please email me.)

So there you go, more than a dozen to start.

Where do I get the other call centers? Take note of call center companies and what looks like call center companies in the area you are going to. Whenever you apply, make new friends at the waiting area. Ask them:
What companies have they been to?
How was their experience?
Where are they going next?

If it’s your first time to apply then people are likely to help you.

That’s how I started my job hunt and that’s how I got a lot of job opportunities.

Whatever happens, just feel free to contact me with your questions. Just remember to ask Google first if you need an address.

God bless.

I’m starting off with a new series called from the tip collection. It will contain a list of four short tips on how to get hired and have an awesome career in a call center.

Each post will have four short tips with a really short description I thought about this because I realized that it takes a long time to write a nice post on the topic and that the situation changes for you. The goal is to provide you with a regular stream of tips weekly.

Find better opportunities by starting your application with stable companies. Many people ask me what call center they need to go to first. Start big. That way whether you pass or fail you will be familiar with the hiring process of big companies. Another benefit is that you will be more comfortable in the call center environment and you the exposure will make you more confident as you visit each company as you go through new opportunities.

Ask your interviewer at least one question you’re curious about in the call center industry. When I was new I had no idea about the call center aside from the fact that you make or take calls and answer questions for customers and it has a night shift schedule and pays well. So, I asked each interviewer one question I’m curious about every opportunity I’ve gotten. I only had one year in college then so the two most common questions I asked are: 1. Is it really true that you are open to hiring non college graduates. (answer:most of them said yes. I went to four call center companies who were snobbish and said no.) 2. Do you have a specific type of people that you’d like to hire? (answer: they hire people from different backgrounds so it’s hard to pin point. As long as you’re able to express yourself in English well, do the work even on night shift’s, weekends or holidays, and are open to shifting schedule and learning new things you are a good candidate)

Bring a nice hard folder to your call center interview. Resume’s no matter how well written will give off a bad impression about you when crumpled. Avoid folds by bringing a nice hard folder or envelope.

Bring a notebook and take as many notes as possible. If it’s your first time to apply in a call center, take notes of as many things as possible. Memory is not too reliable so taking advantage of technology (pen and paper) will give you an advantage over applicants to enjoy pretending they have photographic memory. Take note of call center names, addresses, interview questions, your answers, the processes, questions you couldn’t answer, the phone number of the cute girl who sat beside you anything. Use it to write yourself a guide for a better application the next day. Take notes, review and pick the important.

How can GMA, PNOY and the next president can help you in your career?

GMA is known for putting together several deals that led to call center boom.

PNOY is known for cleaning up the government.

Presidential candidates often promise the masses the moon and the stars and as a result we wait for the country to progress so our life will be better.

I was born in 1985. I don’t recall anything the president did that directly benefitted me.

One day, after watching Blade 2, I took the LRT to practice martial arts at the Philippine Women’s University, the ticket booth lady told me that I didn’t have to pay because it was GMA’s birthday.

Other than that story, I don’t recall anything. Wait I think that GMA’s program for long weekends are awesome because I got to stay at home longer.

If there’s a direct contribution to you that a president had made please correct me in the comments.

Here’s the thing. We are all waiting for progress. What are you doing to prepare for things get better? For a long time, I believed that I will need to concern myself with these things when things get better.

The question we should be asking is what are we doing to prepare ourselves for opportunities?

If a friend is offering to sell you her brand new iPhone 5 for Php14,000 do you have money to buy it right now and sell it to make a few thousand pesos more?

If a friend told you that they are looking to fill a specific opening in their company and the pay is more than double of your current salary, are you prepared to present yourself well in the interview? Do you have the skills for it?

I have a friend who never left her low paying job. She told me she’ll practice English when she gets the chance. That was eight years ago. Last Friday I was making cookies and invited her over. The conversation led to the “preparation talk”. Guess what? Eight years later, she had the same answer. Eight years after, her situation is the same.

Before thinking about the country’s economy, learn to take control of your personal economy first.

What resources do you lack right now and what are the solutions?
Money- look for expenses that you should stop spending on, spend on what you want and need instead if mindlessly throwing away your money.
Time-compute how many hours a day you spend on Facebook, TV or on drinking sessions. Omit as much time as you need so you can spend more time on what matters.
Skills-start reading about the skill you want to learn online for free. As interest increases, consider buying a book or paying someone to teach you the skill. Start small and practice everyday.
Connections – spend more time with people who have what you want and learn from them. I have friends who speak in English all the time so I spent more time hanging out with them.

Everything you have in your situation right now is a preparation for the next one. What are you doing to prepare for it?

Note: I wrote this post to inspire my readers who have goals of improving their situation but are not ready to take the leap. The best you should do is to prepare right now. Either way you benefit whether you push through with your application or not.

Hi Friends,

This is an update to my previous post. They have changed their location to the 25th floor of Export Bank Plaza. They are extending their hiring booth for the rest of the week.

In case you haven’t read my previous post, read on to stay up to date.

My friend at Sutherland Global Services informed me that they are urgently in need of Customer Service and Technical Support Representatives for their premium accounts.

If you are up to the challenge and have prepared yourself for to get hired in a call center, they are setting up a recruitment hub this <del>Tuesday January 29 </del>, Extends this week until February 1,2013 starting at 11am to screen candidates.

Simply go there with your resume and an ID.

The address is at the <del>9th</del> now 25th floor Export Bank Plaza, Don Chino Rocess Avenue, Corner Senator Gil Puyat Avenue, Makati City.

If you’re not prepared. I wrote a list of tips that you can start with so you can go there and get hired on Tuesday. Here’s the list:

Bring an awesome resume.

I get many messages from people who want to work in a call center. I’m grateful for all the reports I get from readers on how they got hired in a call center. I’m inspired when someone tells me that after reading my blog and following the advice they got hired in an international call center despite their disadvantages. Occasionally somebody sends me the full story of how they got hired. Every now and then I get invited for lunch, dinner or a few beers because they got hired or their spouse got hired after reading my tips.

Total Read Time 8 minutes. Total participation time one hour.

Interestingly enough I also get messages from people who are quiting on their goals. They try to convince me why they couldn’t get hired or they send me a message that they are looking for a call center that only has Filipino clients. They tell me that it would help because they can tell the international call center that they have call center experience. That is wrong of course. I only spent one year in college and I got hired in a call center without any experience in a local call center.

When I worked as a recruiter for a call center, I had a short list of questions for myself when screening an applicant:

Can this person communicate well in English?

Does he share his thoughts, ideas and message clearly?

How often does the applicant make grammar and pronunciation errors?

Is it tolerable?

Is this person confident with how he or she speaks?

Do I enjoy speaking to this person?

Is this person listening to what I am telling him or her?

If the applicant fails endorse the applicant to the person who will tell the applicant that we will just call him or her. Of course we never do. We’re too busy looking for better candidates.

When I worked for the call center training school 90% of our students who were sincere with their intention got hired in and international call center 30 days or less. Not everyone got hired. Some of them took low paying jobs. They stayed as fast food attendants, parking ticket girls, mall store clerks, drivers or they stayed unemployed. Sometimes I keep a number of a student and ask them how their life is after a year or two. Sometimes I get a good report, sometimes a sad story filled with excuses and failure.

Recently people are telling me that they are giving up. I have enough messages and I feel I need to respond to it. If I fail then so be it. I can tell myself that I did my best to help my readers forward. This is probably my harshest post to date. Every time I felt like giving up, one of my close friends would step in and give me some straight talk. This often offends or hurts me but after listening to it I know exactly what to do next.

My dad taught me that if all my friends tell me nice things about me all the time even if I’m doing something wrong then all my friends don’t contribute value to my life. (In his own words. Walang kwentang tao lahat yun kung ganun.) He then tells me that if my friend tells me that I’m wrong and what to correct if I mess up even if it risks ruining our relationship then those are my real friends.

I want to be that kind of friend to you today. You can stop reading now if you’re not interested but if you’ve read this far then I know that you’re sincere in getting hired. You could have given up a few paragraphs back but didn’t.

If you feel like giving up on your goal then I want you to sincerely ask yourself the following questions before you give up. Each question also works as a clue to guide you in what to improve next.

What is the reason why you want to give up on your goal to get hired in a call center?

After you’re done please select the reason bellow why you want to give up and ask yourself and answer the questions provided.

My English Sucks:

Did you start thinking and talking to yourself in English?

How often do you check and try to fix your pronunciation?

Did you practice speaking in sossy mode?

Did you try to pretend to be your favorite English speaking celebrity?

How many English movies have I watched since I started looking for work in a call center?

How many people did you practice with?

How many conversations in English have you had?

I don’t have confidence:

Did you write down a list of your accomplishments?

Did you write down a list of nice things people say about you?

Did you write down a list of things that you need to improve?

How many times did you read those lists to realize how awesome you are?

I don’t have the skills:

How many days did you practice to work on those improvements?

How many books have you bought and read to help you get hired?

How many times have you read all the posts in this blog?

How many times have you read this blog out loud?

How many times have you searched Google on how to pronounce a word correctly?

Have you even tried paying someone to teach you?

I keep failing in the Job Application:

How many call centers have you applied in?

How many online applications have you sent?

How many interviews have you had?

What points of improvement did your interviewer tell you to work on?

Since then how many times have you had conversations in English to correct your errors?

Since then how many times have you worked on improving yourself?

How many times have you looked at a failure and realized that it is a puzzle that you can solve and you have a better chance if you try again?

I don’t have money:

How many times have you eaten in a fast food or restaurant?

How many times have you loaded unli on your phone?

How many times have you hanged out at Starbucks or serenity?

How much did you spend last time you drank alcohol?

How many times did you spend to stay at a motel?

How much did you spend in the past few weeks when you went to the mall?

When was the last time you went to a road trip or traveled out of town? How much did you spend?

How many times did you upgraded your car, computer, motorcycle or gadget?

Which of the examples can you stop spending on so you can invest money to improve your skills?

I don’t have time:

How long were you logged in to facebook yesterday? How about the day before that?

How youtube videos have you watched?

How long did you spend browsing memes on 9gag?

How long did you spend watching the news or some Filipino soap opera?

There are only two reasons why you fail. Either you tell me that you can’t or you tell me that you are not willing to put in effort to make it work.

If you say you can’t I don’t believe you. That’s bullshit. Just admit that you’re not willing to do it. I’ll understand. Don’t lie to me that you can’t. I have a waiter who is now an agent. I have a tricycle driver who’s now a senior agent. I have a movie house ticket lady. I have a security guard and a taxi driver. I have a highschool graduate from a public school. They all studied. They all practiced. A lot of them have backgrounds where people laugh at them for trying to speak in English.

What’s your fucking excuse?

Last year, I went out with a girl from China. As I write this post, I’m embarrassed that one day she’ll get to read this since we’re still friends. I’m embarrassed that I have to convince you to put in effort on working to have a better life. I’m embarrassed that many of my Filipino readers need this. Is this the kind of mindset my countrymen have? Fucking pathetic! (Note: Saying fucking pathetic is a good practice for correcting P/F and Th sound errors. For more pronunciation tips visit this post.) People tell me they’re embarrassed that their English sucks so they avoid it. Be embarrassed enough to improve it. Practice your English. Don’t run away from this step. If you avoid mistakes you’ll never know how to correct them yourself.

Many years from now you’ll remember that a guy on the blog told you the truth and made you angry. He told you that you were wrong and you need to change and that he was right.

What kind of report will you give me? Did you achieve your goal or did you give up after reading this?

If you’re not willing to improve please unsubscribe from my lessons and never visit my blog again. Please unlike the call center training tips facebook page and unfriend me if we are facebook friends. I do not want you in my life. I do not want to hear your report on how you gave up. Just go fuck yourself.
